5 Smart Strategies for Halloween Candy

5 Smart Strategies for Halloween Candy

October 10, 2023

It’s almost Halloween, which means there’s a good chance you’ll have a lot of candy around your house. As you know, too much candy can be hard on your family’s teeth. Luckily, there are lots of strategies for Halloween candy to minimize its impact on everyone’s oral health.

Of course, it’s important to keep up with daily brushing and flossing. Visit our Lincroft, NJ office every six months for a cleaning and exam. If you have young kids or cavity-prone teens or adults, ask us aboutpreventive treatments like fluoride and sealants. They provide added protection against dental decay.

If you need to make an appointment, call Newman Springs Dental Care today at 732-352-3903.

In the meantime, check out our suggestions for handling an excess of candy:

  • Put Candy Away – Are you one of those people who keeps a bowl of candy at the ready? Cut down on temptation by keeping it out of sight instead. Choose a spot where your kids can’t easily get to it. Distribute no more than a few pieces at a time. It’s a good idea to establish designated times, like after dinner or right after school.
  • Skip Sticky Treats****and Eat Chocolate Instead – When it comes to candies, some are much better than others for your dental health. Chocolate is a great choice. It melts fast and washes away from teeth, so it’s less likely to cause harm. In contrast, sticky treats like gummies and taffy are often tough to remove. So they are more likely to create problems.
  • Use Candy as Currency – If your child is saving up for a PlayStation or similar big-ticket item, set a price for their Halloween candy and buy it – especially the sticky stuff.
  • Freeze****Candy – Store unopened candy in an airtight container in the freezer. It should keep for months. Then simply thaw it out in small batches when you want to treat your kids. One tip: thaw frozen chocolate in the refrigerator, not at room temperature. Otherwise, condensation will form that can affect how it looks and tastes.
  • Get Crafty With It – If your kids like crafts, candy can be used to make some pretty cool stuff. You’ll find dozens of ideas on Pinterest and elsewhere. We like this suncatcher that is made with candies like LifeSavers and Jolly Ranchers.

Try our strategies for Halloween candy! Then call Newman Springs Dental Care at 732-352-3903, or schedule an appointment in Lincroft, NJ schedule online.

Read Why Our Patients Love Us

I've been to this facility quite a few times now and I have to say they are the absolute best in the business! They are thoughtful, they are competent - they are just fantastic and to say that about a dentist that really means something! You always get a friendly face, they make it as painless as possible and I can't think of any other place I would go For any kind of dental work.

If I could give 6 stars, I would. The staff does whatever they can to make you feel safe and comfortable. Dr Menon is a Rockstar. She does beautiful work and also takes the time to explain the answers to my questions and concerns. They work well with my periodontist so I feel I'm getting the best care all around.

Milena M.

This is actually my favorite dentist I've ever been to! All the staff is really welcoming and sweet and conversational. I hadn't gone to the dentist in like 2-3 years and they weren't judgey at all and they helped me get my teeth looking clean again. Definitely recommend!

Sarah M.

I have been a patient here for 16 years. The staff are great. I am an anxious person when it comes to the dentist, but the staff always make me feel comfortable. They are respectful, friendly and professional. There are new faces, such as Jasmine, who assisted Dr. Menon with my procedure yesterday. And, I have to say, the whole team held it together when the power went out during my procedure..Thanks Newman Springs!!!

I have been going to the office for almost ten years now. Everyone is very kind and professional, and it helped me relax to the idea of dental visits. Kelly is sweet and professional. Thank you.

The Best! Everyone is friendly from the minute you walk in till you leave. They were able to fit me into the office on a Friday for an emergency. The dentist and dental assistant are always in a great mood, laughing and smiling. Great work dynamic between everyone . Highly recommend! See you guys on the next visit. Thanks again!

I was recently seen as a new patient here and I couldn't be any more happier. From the minute I walked in I was greeted with friendly faces and meet Johanna , Michel, and Yeli. Linda was such a amazing assistant throughout my appointment. Dr. Friedman made me feel at ease was easy-going,funny and detailed. Happy to be coming back again.
